How Is The 'Nuclear Football' Handled On Inauguration Day?

One of many things that gets passed from one U.S. President to another is the 'nuclear football' - the briefcase containing nuclear launch codes that accompanies the President everywhere they go. But like many things in 2021, this year will be different.

Since Fmr. President Trump left Washington D.C. ahead of Wednesday's inauguration, the transfer was handled differently. Two 'footballs' were prepared, with one traveling to Florida with Trump.

That football was de-activated at noon and now returns to Washington D.C. The second, kept near President Joe Biden, was activated once he was sworn in.
