Winter is the perfect time to take inventory of your mason bee cocoons

Winter is the perfect time to take inventory of your mason bee cocoons and nesting materials!

First-time mason bee raisers may be surprised at how many mason bee cocoons they raised in just one year! But, how do you know if you have too few or too many cocoons for the upcoming spring?

Here are a couple of easy guidelines to help you take inventory of your cocoons and nesting materials:

  • A good rule of thumb is to have one nesting cavity per cocoon. However, it's common among insect species to have lower survival rates. Therefore, we suggest you KEEP a few extra cocoons to make sure you have enough healthy adult bees emerge in the spring. For example, if you have 48 nesting cavities, keep 50 - 75 cocoons.

  • If you find yourself with extra cocoons this season, you may need to increase your number of nesting materials or an additional house in your yard or your garden.

  • Or, GIVE them to local friends and family! Don't forget to also SHARE your knowledge about mason bee-raising and tell them about our monthly
