Pizza Hut delivery driver William Hotop says he’s afraid he’ll get fired after he scared off a potential robber in what he calls an “old-fashioned gunfight” at his Springfield, Missouri store. The 31-year-old says the restaurant had just closed for the night recently when an intruder broke through the glass door and started to reach for something inside his hoodie.
That’s when Hotop remembered there was a gun “stashed inside the restaurant” and grabbed it. When the suspected robber pulled out his gun and aimed it at Hotop, the two guys started shooting at each other.
"It was a good old-fashioned gunfight," Hotop explains. "I protected Pizza Hut like it was my home.”He says he eventually ran the intruder off the premises, firing the gun a couple of times while he did. He didn’t get hurt during the ordeal and neither did the two other employees working when it happened and no money was taken from the restaurant. But Hotop says Pizza Hut has suspended him without pay and fired the manager on duty that night.Pizza Hut hasn’t said anything about the incident, but that might not be Hotop’s biggest concern. He’s worried because of a prior felony conviction that prevents him from carrying a firearm, and even though the gun he used there wasn’t his, it could still get him in trouble. So much for taking one for the team.
