When fried chicken is made right, it’s tender and juicy, salty, crunchy, and fatty. And as much as everyone loves this American classic, it’s not that easy to get it right when you cook it. Thankfully, there are plenty of chicken joints out there that know exactly what they’re doing when it comes to frying chicken. And according to the Southern food and fried chicken experts at The Daily Meal, these are the top five fried chicken restaurants in the country.
#5 Pies 'n' Thighs - The chicken at this Brooklyn spot comes seasoned with black pepper, cayenne, and paprika, so the crust has tons of flavor. You might be surprised to find a New York restaurant on this list, but Pies ‘n’ Thighs is known for their flaky biscuits and rotating selection of pies as well as their juicy chicken.
#4 Son of a Gun - At this Los Angeles restaurant, the thing to order is their fried chicken sandwich. It comes topped with spicy B&B pickle slaw and has sriracha aioli and they say the messy meal is worth all the stains you’ll end up with after eating it.
#3 Lucy’s Fried Chicken - When you’re in Austin, come experience fried chicken at Lucy’s. They have some daring menu items as well, like grilled diablo oysters and Mexican Coke sweet potatoes, but their fried chicken is classic.
#2 Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken - The original Gus’s is in Mason, Tennessee, but they have 22 locations in 11 states now, all south of the Mason-Dixon Line. They’re known for having a long wait, but the hot and spicy fried chicken is totally worth it.
#1 Willie Mae's Scotch House - Willie Mae Seaton started serving her famous fried chicken from a shack connected to her New Orleans home over 30 years ago and it was a low-key spot until it won the James Beard Foundation’s “American Classic” award. Just weeks after that, Willie Mae’s was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, but thanks to members of the Southern Foodways Alliance, it was rebuilt and is going strong today. When you’re in the Big Easy, check out this Southern cuisine at its finest.
