There’s A Spike In Poison Hotline Calls Over Dietary Supplements

A new study is a reminder that supplements aren’t to be taken lightly.

A study published in the “Journal of Medical Toxicology” is revealing that U.S. Poison Control Center calls have increased by almost 50-percent because of supplements. That’s a call every 24 minutes.

The biggest warning comes about children. Nearly 70-percent of those calls involve children 6-years-old or younger. A slight percentage of the time serous complications occurred.

A senior author of the study, Dr. Gary Smith stresses that dietary products are not held to the same standards as over the counter medications. They aren’t even required to undergo trials or get FDA approval.

Remember to research the supplements before you buy and keep them out of reach of children.Source: CBS News
