On April 8, 2023, at approximately 12:26 a.m., an officer from the Marion Police Department was placing a bicycle in the bed of a marked Marion Police Department patrol vehicle (a police F150) in the 900 block of Fairwood Ave. While the officer was doing this, a 2007 gray Ford sedan struck a parked car and the police vehicle.
The officer attempted to stop the vehicle; the Ford sedan failed to comply with the signal to stop. The officer used the siren and emergency lights on his vehicle, but the suspect continued to ignore the officer and fled.
The officer continued to follow the Ford sedan and attempted to get the Ford sedan to stop. The vehicle went north on Fairwood, then westbound on Marion Williamsport. The vehicle turned southbound on Kellogg Parkway and left the west side of the roadway and crashed.
The driver, Dustin W. Kraviec age 31, of Marion, was seriously injured in the crash. Marion Police Officers attempted to render aid, including performing CPR. Mr. Kraviec was transported to Marion General Hospital where he died of his injuries sustained in the crash. The Ohio State Highway Patrol will investigate the crashes.
The officer was placed on paid administrative leave, as is customary in critical incidents. There were no other occupants of the Ford sedan.
