Let’s Read 20 Joins National Effort to Break Reading Record

The Let’s Read 20 (LR20) Community Reading Initiative along with all community schools, preschools and Marion Public Library will once again participate in the world’s largest annual shared reading experience on Thursday, October 27. The event, named Read for the Record (RFTR), is held annually and organized by Jumpstart, a national organization focused on promoting early childhood education through quality preschool programming leading to kindergarten readiness. The goal is to see how many preschoolers and elementary school students get read the book on RFTR day.

Much like Let’s Read 20, Jumpstart partners with individuals, preschools and community organizations to help children develop the language and literacy skills they need to set them on a path for academic and lifelong success. Let’s Read 20 joins the initiative to bring awareness to the “Read 20 Minutes Daily” message by coordinating Read for the Record activities shared throughout Marion County.

On October 27, Marion County children and adults will gather to learn, laugh, and read this year's campaign book, Nigel and the Moon by Anton Eady. The book and classroom activity kits are being provided by Let’s Read 20 to all preschools and elementary schools across Marion County so students can fully participate in the event. All participating children will receive a Let’s Read 20 wristband that exclaims, “I read my 20!” a reference to the Let’s Read 20 message of reading to a child at least 20 minutes each day. Families with young children can also participate in the Marion Public Library Storytime at 10:00 am and 11:00 am on the same day at the Library.

Many of the literacy initiatives done by LR20 are supported by United Way of North Central Ohio with the goal of making early childhood literacy a priority in Marion County. LR20 promotes and markets the advantages of reading 20 minutes a day to a child from birth through elementary school.
