MARION, OH–Aqua is announcing a new project to replace a six-inch water main with an eight-inch main. The main being replaced has served the area just north of Marion Cemetery since 1890.
Construction was initiated this week and will be conducted along South Main Street from Hill Street to East Walnut Street and Washington Street between South Prospect Street and Delaware Avenue. Work is expected to be complete by June 2022. This project involves replacing 2,100 linear feet of 132-year-old, six-inch cast iron water main with an 8-inch ductile iron main. Fire protection will be enhanced by replacing two fire hydrants with five. Eleven new valves used to isolate areas for repair or maintenance will also be installed.
“This is another example of coordination with the City of Marion,” said Aqua Ohio’s Area Manager Scott Ballenger. “We’re replacing the water main and the City will be following our project with plans to replace the sewer and full street replacement along South Main.”
Traffic in the area is being maintained, but on-street parking restrictions will be required. Drivers are asked to use extra caution in the area. Access to individual driveways will be maintained.
Water service will be maintained throughout construction. However, seventy customers receiving new service lines will experience short-term interruptions while their services are connected to the new main near the end of the project. Those customers will be notified by Aqua in advance of the planned interruptions.
Underground Utilities of Monroeville, Ohio, was selected to perform the work and the budget for this project is $538,500. Ballenger said the company expects to spend more than $40 million across Aqua’s 35 Ohio systems in 2022, approximately $3.5 million of that will be invested locally.
