AQUA ANNOUNCES PLANS TO REPLACE 1,100 FEET OF WATER MAIN ON BOONE AVENUE

MARION, OH–Aqua is announcing a new project to replace a six-inch water main on Boone Avenue from East Center Street to the street’s northern end. The replacement is being conducted in advance of the City of Marion’s plans to replace an adjacent sewer line and the surface of Boone Avenue. Construction is planned to begin this week and Aqua’s portion will be complete in May.

This project involves replacing a 106-year-old, six-inch cast iron water main with the same size ductile iron main which is stronger and more corrosion resistant. Fire protection will be enhanced by doubling the number of hydrants in the area from one to two. Six valves that are used to isolate portions for repair or maintenance needs will also be replaced.

“Aqua coordinates our infrastructure investment plans with the City to save resources and avoid disturbing new pavement,” said Aqua Ohio’s Area Manager Scott Ballenger. “In this case, the City told us they had plans to replace a sewer line and repave Boone Avenue. With the water main being over 100 years old, it just makes sense to replace the water main too.”

Traffic in the area is being maintained, but daily lane and parking restrictions may be required. Drivers are asked to use extra caution in the area. Access to individual driveways will be maintained.

Water service will be maintained throughout construction. However, customers receiving new service lines will experience short-term interruptions while their services are connected to the new main near the end of the project. Those customers will be notified by Aqua in advance of the planned interruptions.

Dirt Dawg Excavating of Ashland Ohio, was selected to perform the work. The budget for this project is $280,500. Ballenger said the company expects to spend more than $40 million across Aqua’s 35 Ohio systems in 2022, approximately $3.5 million of that will be invested locally.
