Marion Deputies Conducting Investigation Into Pipe Bomb Found In Cornfield

On September 2, 2021, at 7:58pm, Deputies from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 2400 block of Hillman Ford Road, in Marion Township, for a report of a suspected pipe bomb laying in a cornfield approximately 50 yards west of the roadway.

Responding Deputies determined that the device was suspicious and contacted the Columbus Division of Fire Bomb Squad who responded to the scene. The device was x-rayed, made safe, and collected by bomb technicians. Upon further inspection, the device was found to be a crude pipe bomb and evidence suggests that someone had attempted to detonate it; however, the device failed.

The device was collected as evidence and investigators are currently attempting to determine when the device was placed at this location and by whom. At this time, investigators have no reason to believe that this device was intended for any particular individual or target. Sheriff Matt Bayles would like to remind the public any and all suspicious devices/packages should be reported to the proper local authorities and should never be handled until experts can determine that they are safe.

If anyone has any information pertaining to this incident, please contact Captain Ken Rittenour at 740-382-8244 ext. 5114.
