The Boston Red Sox's latest losing streak couldn't have come at a worse time.
The Red Sox have lost six of their last 10 games, which included being swept in a three-game series against the arch rival New York Yankees, coinciding in the New York jumping Boston for a Wild Card spot and second-place in the American League East Division standings.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora revealed that the team's clubhouse was "very quiet" after a 5-2 loss at Yankee Stadium Wednesday (August 18) night.
“I tell you that, it’s very quiet in the clubhouse, and understandably so," Cora said during his postgame Zoom media session via NESN. "It’s a different feeling than early in the season when we came here and we did what we did. All that stuff is in the past, you know? It’s part of the season, we still put ourselves in a position that we control what we can do the rest of the season and then playing in October, but obviously, we have to be better and they know it.”
Starting pitcher Nick Pivetta, who lasted just 1 2/3 innings during Wednesday's loss, also shared details of the clubhouse mood after the game.
“We’re just hungry for more. We just have to stay steady, stay fast through this little bit of a stretch,” Pivetta said over Zoom via NESN. “We have an off day tomorrow, which will be really good, get some energy get some rest. Get some energy moving forward. It’s just focusing on game to game and going out there competing every single day and doing our jobs. We’re very confident in ourselves and we’ve done a really good job up to this point. Yes, things haven’t been great as of lately, but we’re really close and we’re doing a good job. We just gotta stay together and stay moving forward. It’s baseball. It’s a game. It’s hard at times, things don’t go your way, but it’s staying focused, keeping the energy up and being really positive moving forward.”
The Yankees have been the hottest team in baseball since the all-star break, going 23-9 since returning to action.
Boston led New York by a 9.5-game advantage in July, before the Yankees moved past the Red Sox during their second win of the three-game sweep.
