Man Pleads Guilty to Ethnic Intimidation of a Marion Police Officer

Scott Stephens plead guilty to Ethnic Intimidation of a Police Officer on January 6, 2021. On October 29, 2020, Stephens, of Marion, was arrested for being intoxicated in public. He was transported to the Multi-County Correctional Center by Officer Montel Smith of the Marion Police Department.

On his way to the jail, Stephens repeatedly hurled racial slurs at Officer Smith and threatened Officer Smith and his family.

“Officer Smith conducted himself in the utmost professional manner while being subjected to Stephens’ barrage of racial slurs,” said Marion County Prosecutor Ray Grogan. “Officer Smith’s actions that evening represent excellence in police work, in spite of the words and threats bombarding him, and we are proud that he, and so many others like him, protect us each day.”

Sentencing will take place on January 25, 2021.
