Disney To Buy Most Of Fox In $52-Billion Deal

Disney says it's buying most of 21st Century Fox for 52-billion dollars in a historic Hollywood mega-merger.  As part of the deal, Disney gets Fox's movie studio, TV studio, and cable channels FX and National Geographic.  The deal will unite popular franchises, such as 21st Century Fox's "The Simpsons" and "X-Men" with Disney's Pixar and "Star Wars" films.

The Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, Broadcasting Network and some national sports networks will be spun into a different company.

The deal is an effort by Disney to bolster its main TV and film businesses against growing online competition from companies like Netflix and Amazon.  Because of the deal, Disney now has a 60-percent stake in Netflix competitor, Hulu.

Legal experts tell "USA Today" that the Disney-Fox deal will face scrutiny from the Justice Department, which has taken an aggressive stance on large mergers.

Disney also announced that CEO Robert Iger would remain in that post through 2021.
