A Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy that was being attacked by dogs, accidentally shot himself in the foot yesterday during a drug raid that involved Deputies and other members of the MARMET Drug Task Force at a house in the 300 block of Farming Street, about 11:30 a.m. yesterday.
Deputy Mike Wheeler shot himself in the foot when he was being attacked by two pit bulls. According to Marion County Sheriff Tim Bailey, the dogs backed Deputy Wheeler into a corner and were biting at him and jumping at his chest. Wheeler fired two shots, one of which went through his foot.
One of the dogs was shot and killed, and no one else was injured in the shooting.
Deputy Wheeler will be on light duty until he is fully recovered.
The Marion Police Department is investigating the shooting.
