MARION, OH–Aqua Ohio (Aqua) is announcing a new project to replace water service connections for customers along Delaware Avenue from Superior Street to Washington Street and along South State Street between Washington Street and Gurley Ave. The project will begin May 3 and is expected to be complete by the end of June.
This project involves transferring 40 service connections from a six-inch main to a nearby 16-inch main and removing the smaller main from service. The six-inch main has been in service for over 100 years and has a significant history of breaks. Five fire hydrants will also be installed as part of the construction.
“This project will allow us to abandon a smaller water main that we believe was installed in the 1890’s,” said Aqua Ohio’s Area Manager Scott Ballenger. “The old line has reached the end of its useful life and we have a larger main that we can connect to nearby.”
Traffic in the area is being maintained, but daily lane restrictions will be required in this high-traffic area. Drivers may want to consider adjusting their travel routes for the next several weeks to avoid delays. Access to individual driveways will be maintained as workers will place steel plates over excavated areas.
Water service will be maintained throughout construction. However, customers receiving new service lines will experience short-term interruptions while their services are connected to the new main near the end of the project. Those customers will be notified by Aqua in advance of the planned interruptions.
Underground Utilities Incorporated, of Monroeville, was selected to perform the work. The budget for this project is $398,000. Ballenger said the company expects to spend more than $70 million across Aqua’s 33 Ohio systems in 2021, approximately $6 million of that will be invested locally.
