On Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at approximately 1:34 pm, a deputy from the Union County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a 2009 Lincoln MKS for a traffic violation on State Route 4 near Pharisburg. The deputy attempted to stop the southbound vehicle near Kinney Pike driving 75 miles per hour in a posted 55 mile per hour zone. The suspect fled west on State Route 347, south on Sandusky Road, and west on Martin Welch Road and abruptly stopped in a driveway in the 16000 block of Martin Welch Road. A female passenger exited the vehicle at this location and the suspect began to flee again, almost striking a Sheriff’s cruiser while exiting the driveway. The vehicle continued west on Martin Welch Road and turned south on State Route 31. A deputy successfully deployed a tire deflation device near State Route 31 and Hillview Road. The suspect vehicle struck the device on the passenger side front tire and continued southbound on State Route 31 and then onto US Route 33 eastbound. The tire began to break apart on the suspect’s vehicle and it came to a stop on State Route 4, on the US Route 33 overpass. The suspect refused to cooperate with deputies and was eventually Tased. He was treated at the scene by EMS units from the Marysville Division of Fire and then transported to the Tri County Regional Jail. The suspect was identified as Troy C. Burgess, age 25 of Marion. He was arrested for two outstanding warrants; a felony warrant from the City of Marion for identity theft and a bench warrant from the Marysville Municipal Court for failure to appear for a contempt hearing. The incident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and additional charges are expected when the case is presented to a future Union County Grand Jury. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the pursuit by officers from the Marysville Division of Police and troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
