Troopers from the Marion Post are investigating a one vehicle fatal crash that occurred on State Route 739 near Campbell Rd. Marion Central Dispatch received a call in reference to the crash at approximately 6:35 am. Through the investigation they established the time of crash to be approximately 1:30 am. A 2011 Volkswagen was traveling westbound on State Route 739, when he failed to negotiate a curve, drove off the left side of the roadway, striking a utility pole, culvert and tree.
The Volkswagen was driven by Brent Whalen, age 23, of Marion. Mr. Whalen was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by Dr. Mark Davis, Marion County Coroner.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by Marion Township Fire Department and EMS, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, 1st Advanced EMS, and Ed’s Towing.
This crash remains under investigation.
