Head-On Crash In Union County

On Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at approximately 6:40 am, the Union County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call reporting a head-on motor vehicle crash on State Route 31, north of Osbourne Road in York Township. Deputies and units from the Liberty Township Fire Department, the Marysville Fire Department, the Northern Union County Fire and EMS District, and the Bokes Creek Township Fire Department responded to the scene and found a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe with four occupants had struck a 2016 Freightliner tractor trailer. One victim was entrapped in the Hyundai and had to be extricated from the vehicle. MedFlight was called to the scene and transported the driver of the Hyundai to Grant Medical Center. Three additional victims from the Hyundai were initially transported to Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Grant Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The driver of the Freightliner was not injured.

The preliminary investigation has revealed the Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling southbound on State Route 31 and drove left of center and struck the northbound Freightliner semi head on. Drugs and alcohol are not considered to be factors in the crash. State Route 31 remains closed at State Route 47 and State Route 739.

Units from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and Union Rural Electric assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
